Summer is usually time we spend more time traveling. Whether it is a vacation or just enjoying the summer weather, it is good to think about our impact the environment. Travel can impact the environment in many ways, from our carbon footprint to generating waste. There are many easy and practical ways to make summer travel more sustainable, without making major changes.
Eco-Friendly Destinations and Accomodations
Look for destinations that support the environment, such as conservation efforts, eco-certifications, and local green initiatives. There are accommodations that incorporate responsible tourism. You can also look for environmental education programs or volunteering efforts that support the environment, such as wildlife causes.
Transportation
Air travel has a considerable carbon footprint. When possible, look into other methods of travel, such as trains, buses, or carpooling to your destination. When flying is necessary, choose nonstop flights to reduce emissions, and consider airlines with carbon offset programs. At your destination, look for modes of transport such as biking, walking, or public transportation.
Pack Sustainably
Sustainable travel can start with the things you pack. Bring reusable items like water bottles, utensils, and shopping bags to cut down on single-use items. Items like reusable straws are easy to carry, and a great alternative to plastic straws.
Support Local Businesses
When traveling, look for local restaurants, shops, and tour guides. Supporting small, local businesses helps boost the economy in your destination, and lowers the carbon footprint by choosing local goods.
Be Mindful
Whether you’re hiking, visiting a beach, or touring a city, be mindful. Reduce your impact when you travel, from the city to natural regions. Conserve resources such as water and energy, and don’t disturb any nature or wildlife.
Literally, just when I’m about to go on my summer vacation. Thanks so much for this!
I agree, great tips here. We are hoping to have a holiday in the summer and I will be looking into eco friendly options for sure.
These are great tips and things we all need to be reminded of. We are jusgt having days out and the odd night away this year
Thank you so much for these tips! I love to travel, but I don’t want to impact the environment if I can avoid it.
These are awesome tips! I would never think to bring my own reusable items. That’s a huge pro tip.
Great tips. I purchased a cutlery set online that comes in a handy case. It includes a stainless steel straw as well as a knife, fork, spoon and chopsticks. So I never need to use platic utensils.
Thank you so much for the tips, they’re amazing. Every time I travel, I try to shop and eat where the locals eat and shop, the experience is often a lot richer and as you mentioned, helps with the sustainability.
It is so important to be mindful of the countries that you are going to and where you are visiting. Thank you for these sustainable summer reminders.
