Tips for Your Toddler’s Bedtime Routine

Getting your toddler to bed every night can be a challenge. As a parent, this can feel like an overwhelming daily struggle. However, you can come up with a consistent routine that can help make bedtime a little easier. Working on good sleep habits and a routine for winding down can make life much easier. Here are some tips.

Set a Consistent Bedtime

Toddlers thrive on routine, so try to keep bedtime around the same time every night, even on weekends. A consistent schedule helps regulate their internal clock, making it easier for them to fall asleep and wake up naturally. This will help you, since a predictable schedule is healthy for your day as well.

Create a Calm Environment

A peaceful environment encourages relaxation. Dim the lights, lower noise levels, and avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime. Make their bed feel warm and welcoming, with their favorite comforts.  Blackout curtains can also be useful to insure that the room stays dark every night. You can also use a calming room spray with natural lavender essential oils.

Soothing Activities to Wind Down

Bedtime routines work best when they include soothing pre-bedtime activities. Some good ideas include reading a book, listening to lullabies, and taking a warm bath. You can also play soothing music or white noise as your little one drifts off to sleep.

Comfort and Reassurance

Separation anxiety is common at bedtime for toddlers. Offer gentle reassurance with a hug and comforting words. A nightlight can also help ease their fears if they have anxiety about a completely dark room. At the same time, be firm about establishing a bedtime

Be Patient

Despite all efforts, there can be nights that are tough. This can be due to a variety of reasons, from activity levels to worrying about things. This is to be expected, but remain composed and proceed as you normally night.  These nights can be tough and may mean you have to push through a longer or later bedtime, and that is just a part of parenting.
