There are many ways to be more eco-friendly when you are shopping, from how you shop to what you shop for. Being more thoughtful of your choices when you go shopping is a great way to reduce your environmental impact and contribute to a sustainable future.
Here are some ways to be more eco-friendly on your next shopping trip.
Bring Reusable Bags
Regardless of if your area no longer provides plastic bags, you should bring a reusable bag to limit the use of single-use bags.
If you have a hard time remembering bags, you can buy small packable bags that clip to your purse or even a keychain.
Reduce Packaging Waste
You may be able to reduce packaging waste by buying in bulk, bringing reusable produce bags, and so on.
Shop Local
Shopping local has a lot of good advantages. Support local farmers’ markets and stores to reduce the carbon footprint associated with long-distance transportation of goods.
Choose Eco-friendly, Sustainably Sourced Items
Look for products that are eco-friendly, such as ENERGY STAR for appliances or products with the Fair Trade logo. Do your research and read labels to see which products use better practices in their production.
Buy in bulk, and look for eco-friendly packaging
Purchase items in bulk when possible to reduce packaging waste. Many stores have bulk sections for items like grains, nuts, and spices where you can use your own containers. Opt for products with minimal or eco-friendly packaging. Look for items that are packaged in recyclable materials or that have less excess packaging. Use a water bottle instead of buying bottled water. Store items at home in glass jars or other reusable containers if needed.
Combine deliveries or trips
Shopping online can be wasteful for single items due to packaging and the carbon footprint of delivering. The same goes for trips to the store – try to combine trips or buy more items in one trip.
Shop for used or refurbished items
Consider buying secondhand or vintage items. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online marketplaces can be great places to find pre-owned items.
Shop for reusable, not single use
Avoid single-use plastic straws and utensils. Carry a reusable straw and utensil set with you if needed.
Find items that are reusable, and better quality items that will last longer.
