Halloween is a fun time of year, and a great time for enjoying Halloween themed parties. However, parties can be wasteful, from single use items to plastic decorations. Here are some ideas to make some easy changes so that your party is a little more eco-friendly.
Eco-Friendly Decor
Instead of buying disposable decor, look for natural and reusable materials. Some ideas for natural materials includes pumpkins, leaves, gourds, pinecones, bare branches, and so on. These can later be composted, instead of contributing to the landfill.
Fabric and felted banners are a great option, as they are more eco-friendly than plastic, and can be used year after year.
If you use lights, look for LED lights that conserve energy.
Sustainable Costumes
Thing about finding costumes from items you already own, buying used costumes, or using clothing from thrift shops. You can also encourage guests to do the same, or host a costume swap or theme party that involves thrifted clothes.
Green Party Supplies
Skip one time use items, like disposable plastic cups and plates. Use reusable dishware and compostable options made from natural materials such as corn, bamboo or palm leaves.
Treats and Snacks
Look for candies with minimal packaging. You can buy items in bulk, larger packages, and so on. Treats can include seasonal items, fruits, and other foods that are local and support local farms and businesses.
Entertainment
Find activities that don’t involve a lot of waste. You could do pumpkin carving or decorating, cookie decorating, a photo booth, etc.
Compost and Recycle
Have clearly labeled bins available for compost, recycling, and trash. This makes it easy for guests to dispose of their items responsibly. When the party is over, your clean-up will be quick, organized, and much less wasteful.
