The holidays can be a very stressful time of year. There are so many elements of planning, shopping, gift giving, sending cards, holiday parties, school events, cold weather, cold and flu season, and so much more. I always find myself getting run down during the holidays, so here are some tips!
One of my biggest proactive tips is to plan early! Have a notebook and make lists and start working on the holidays early. Make a holiday card list in October, keep a running list of gifts starting in the summer. Shop early for things like toilet paper if you are going to have guests, stock up on tissues any time for cold and flu season.
Always take time for self-care. If you are a busy parent, there is no reason why you can’t have 20 minutes a day to just lay on the couch, read a couple chapters of your favorite book, sip some tea, or even scroll through social media.
Exercise
Exercise is always a good way to stay healthy, and is a great way to reduce stress. While you might feel tired from a day of work or watching the kids, it can actually energize you.
Shower or Bath
Taking a nice hot shower or bath is a great way to unwind. The heat from a shower or bath in the evening can help to promote better sleep as well. If you take a bath, add some epsom salts or essential oils such as lavender.
Hot Tea or Other Soothing Beverage
Hot tea or other soothing drinks can help you to feel more relaxed. Look for teas such as lavender or chamomile that help promote relaxation.
Meditation, Yoga, Gratitude
It can be easy to get caught up in the holidays. Take a moment to meditate or practice yoga to feel more grounded. This is also a good time to practice gratitude, whether you use a journal or put together donations for those in need.
Rethink Gifts
Gifting can take over the holidays, and become about quantity. If possible, think about downsizing gift giving. Some families pare down to simple gift swaps, or gifting experiences over material items. Gifts shouldn’t cause stress or spending more than you can afford, which is generally a big part of holiday stress.
Get Enough Rest
It can be tough to get enough sleep during the holidays, whether you are up late wrapping gifts or trying to fit in other things because you don’t have enough time. Prioritize getting enough sleep so that you don’t become run down.
Healthy Habits
The holidays can be a time of junk food, sweets, and overconsumption. Feeling bad from unhealthy foods is not a good feeling, so try to work in some healthy foods whatever opportunity you have. Prepare a healthy breakfast the night before, have a salad or fruit salad for lunch. By factoring healthy meals, you will feel better overall.
Vitamins & Supplements
Vitamins and supplements aren’t a replacement for healthy eating, but they can help support your body and immune system during stressful times.
Essential Oils
Essential oils can make your home feel cozy, and you can also use blends for your home or yourself to help with stress. Use oils like lavender, or create blends for a calming effect.
