Planning a Valentine’s Day celebration? Maybe it’s a romantic dinner, or a fun Galentine’s Day party. There are many easy ways to make your celebration more eco-friendly and sustainable. Here are some tips!
Choose Experiences Over Physical Gifts
Instead of material gifts, think of things like experiences. Tickets to a game or concert can be a wonderful and memorable idea, and doesn’t contribute to wastefulness.
Look for Eco-Friendly Gifts
When you are shopping for gifts, look for sustainable ideas. For example, local flowers, organic and ethically sourced chocolate or coffee, or homemade items. Look for things labeled organic, ethical, sustainable, ethically sourced, etc.
Support Local and Small Businesses
Bring a reusable bag to shop, and shop local. Seek out smaller businesses so that you can give them your support.
Reduce Single-Use Packaging
When looking for gifts, food, decorations, etc., try to reduce the amount of single use packaging that you use.
For gift wrap, consider fabric wrapping paper, upcycling paper, or using bags that can be reused several times.
Low-Waste Valentine’s Day Meals
Plan a Valentine’s meal that is low waste. Make a meal at home with as little packaging as possible, and avoid takeout.
Sustainable Flowers or Alternatives
Look for flowers that are locally grown, or alternatives like paper or wood flowers. Or, choose potted plants such as houseplants or ones that can be planted and enjoyed for years. Houseplants can improve you indoor air quality and outdoor plants are good for the environment.
Choose Reusable or Compostable Decor
Look for decor that is eco-friendly, such as reusable items or ones that you can compost afterwards. These could be felt, materials found in nature, paper, etc.

I like to use cute reusable shopping bags for the present. That way they can use them for groceries.
I always like to have a more sustainable holiday. I hate to waste things. I have the same holiday bags I’ve used for YEARS.
I am loving these tips for celebrating sustainably. I do try and live as sustainably as possible….. and these tips are spot on. I do reuse holiday gifting bags whenever possible…. as they cost a lot and if they still look like new …. why not reuse them. It is so wasteful otherwise….
Loved these sustainable Valentine’s Day ideas! Thoughtful, creative, and eco-friendly ways to celebrate love without creating unnecessary waste or excess.
I have consciously moved towards experiences instead of physical gifts. It’s been my favourite option for years now for all sorts of gifts from Valentines, birthdays to Christmas. It seems to be something all the recipients have appreciated and is a great way to reduce waste.
So many thoughtful ways to celebrate love while being mindful of our impact on the planet. Fantastic read.
I typically don’t make a huge deal over Valentine’s Day. To me love should be expressed every single day with a reminder. I’m all for supporting local businesses though.
