Tips for Keeping Your Home Clean When You Have Pets

Pets change our lives and bring us love as part of our family. But whether you have a cat or dog, keeping your home clean can be a challenge. With some cleaning strategies, you can keep your home clean.

Establish a Cleaning Routine

Consistency is key when it comes to tackling messes. Vacuum daily to keep up with pet hair, and look for a quality vacuum or one designed specifically for pet hair.  Keep up with scooping cat litter or cleaning up dog poop to minimize odors and messes.

Use Pet-Friendly Cleaning Products

Look for non-toxic, pet-safe cleaning products for floors, furniture, and litter boxes. Since pets come in contact with many surfaces and also lick their paws and fur, it is good to reduce use of chemicals when you can.

Groom Regularly

Regular grooming reduces shedding and dirt brought indoors. Brush your pet often to collect loose hair before it ends up on your couch or carpet. You can also incorporate regular bathing as needed to help with odor and dander.

Protect Your Furniture

Invest in washable slipcovers or throws for furniture. These not only protect your sofas and chairs but are easy to remove and clean when needed.

Tackle Accidents Quickly

Whether you’re house training a puppy or dealing with the occasional hairball, prompt cleanup is crucial. Enzyme-based cleaners are especially effective for removing stains and neutralizing odors at the source, which can prevent pets from returning to the same spot.

Maintain Litter Boxes and Bedding

For cat owners, scooping litter daily and deep-cleaning the box weekly keeps your home smelling fresh. For all pets, wash their bedding regularly in hot water to kill odors and bacteria, and vacuum or shake out mats and blankets between washes.

  1. I struggle with this due to my dogs shedding for sure. Furniture coves sounds like a great place to start.

  2. I think establishing a proper cleaning routine is the most important part. As someone who is serious about hygiene and also love pets, I found this post really useful

  3. One thing I didn’t know until today is how the hair can travel. I was bending down to clean something on the ground and saw the inside of my son’s computer (not internal but in the gap between the front panel and the inside). It had cat hair in bunches!! We stay on top of the hair so good. Or so I thought!

  4. thank you for this.. we were just going to be taking care of a pet of a cousin when they are away on vacation for a few days

  5. ! With two dogs in the house, keeping things clean can feel like a full-time job. I especially liked the reminder to use pet-safe cleaning products—sometimes that gets overlooked.
