Tips For Making Your Home More Eco-Friendly This Spring

Spring is the perfect time to start fresh, and incorporate sustainable habits into your home. Small changes in daily habits can have a big impact on the environment while also helping you save money.

Energy-Efficient Lighting

Switch to energy-efficient LED bulbs and use natural lighting when possible. Use blackout curtains to block out the heat on hot days, and open blinds and curtains on cooler days to capture heat.

Conserve Water

Fix any leaks in faucets or pipes to prevent unnecessary water loss. Install low-flow showerheads and faucets to reduce water usage without sacrificing performance. If you are maintaining a lawn or garden, water plants in the early morning or late evening to prevent evaporation. Set up a rain barrel to collect rainwater to help supplement your outdoor watering needs..

Eco-Friendly Cleaning

Spring cleaning is a big part of the season, but many household cleaners contain harsh chemicals. Look for natural, biodegradable cleaning products, or you can make your own using simple ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice. Natural cleaners are not only better for the environment, but are safer for your home, family, and pets.

Sustainable Gardening

When planning your landscaping or garden, choose native plants that require less water and maintenance. Composting food scraps and yard waste reduces waste going to landfills, and creates nutrient-rich soil that you can use in your garden. Avoid chemical pesticides and fertilizers when treating your lawn or garden. Water strategically (such as early mornings) to save water. Make your yard a safe haven for pollinators and wildlife, by eliminating chemicals, using native plants, setting up watering stations, and so on.

Reduce Single-Use Items

Avoid single use products when you shop. Avoid disposable water bottles and use reusable bottles and straws. Bring cloth bags when shopping, and choose glass or stainless steel food containers instead of plastic.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

If you’re planning on replacing any appliances this spring, choose energy-efficient models with the ENERGY STAR label. These appliances use less energy, which reduces your utility bills and lowers greenhouse gas emissions.

Eco-Friendly Laundry Routine

With warmer temperatures and a fresh breeze, spring is the perfect time to dry clothes naturally. Hang laundry outside on a clothesline or use an indoor drying rack to cut down on electricity use. Look for natural and biodegradable laundry detergents, and run your washing machine using cold water.

Declutter Responsibly

Spring cleaning often leads to unwanted items. Instead of throwing things away, donate gently used clothing, furniture, and household items to local charities or thrift stores. Recycle electronics properly and consider upcycling old furniture.

Eco-Friendly Home Décor

If you decide to change up your decor this spring, look for sustainable materials such as bamboo, natural fabrics, reclaimed wood, or recycled glass. Look for  furniture and home accessories made from ethical and eco-friendly sources, such as sustainable wood. Investing in quality, durable pieces reduces waste and supports responsible manufacturing practices.

  1. Great post! I have been doing a lot of these eco-friendly tips. I changed all my kitchen appliances last year to energy-efficient models, I have moved away from plastic bottles, and we have changed all bulbs and much more in our home.

  2. I would also add replacing your windows if you have the money for it. We are gearing up to replace ours because we use so much more energy than we need to with our old ones.

  3. Great reminders of allll the ways we can be more responsible and conscious. I get in most of these on a regular basis, but spring is the perfect time to take on a bit more thought.

  4. I love these eco-friendly tips! It’s amazing how small changes like switching to LED bulbs and fixing leaks can really make a difference!

  5. I love the idea of sustainable gardening! Nothing like growing your own food, and making sure to use the compost from around your home is truly a great way to keep sustainability in mind when creating a garden!

  6. One of the best things we change at our house is to avoid disposable items and use reusable things. Saved the environment and helped to save money as well. These are great ideas to consider. Thank you for sharing.

  7. I love the idea of sustainable gardening, especially avoiding chemical pesticides. There’s a real path of harm these can cause, starting with the bugs, then the bunny, then the bird. One by one, they all suffer in the chain of life.

  8. love your list of reminders and suggestions. i love to donate to my local goodwill and salvation army when i am doing spring cleaning.

I struggle with reducing single-use items in my daily routine. Your suggestion to switch to reusable bottles and straws is helpful. Do you have any tips for remembering to carry them consistently?

  10. Love the declutter responsibly part. I tend to get caught up in downsizing and forget the environmental aspect. Also, been using vinegar and saving some coins 🙂
