Hibiscus Tea (Agua de Jamaica)

I have always enjoyed teas that have hibiscus in them. When we were on a trip to Mexico, we were given Agua de Jamaica, which is iced hibiscus tea.  I loved it, so when I got home, I made my own hibiscus teas.  This tea is super easy to make and customizable to your preferences.

The main ingredient is dried hibiscus, which is easy to find on Amazon or in health food stores.

Ingredients

For iced tea:

  • 2 cups dried hibiscus flowers
  • 8 cups water
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • Ice

For a cup of hot tea:

  • 1 tablespoon dried hibiscus flowers
  • 8 cups water
  • sweetener, to taste
  • use a stainless tea strainer (like the one below) or paper tea bag for steeping

Instructions for iced tea:

Bring water to a boil.

Once the water reaches a boil, add the dried hibiscus flowers to the water. You can use a large infuser, or strain the dried flowers after.

Allow the hibiscus flowers to steep in the hot water for about 15 to 20 minutes.

After steeping, strain out the hibiscus flowers.

Add the granulated sugar to the strained liquid and stir until it dissolves completely.

Let the tea cool to room temperature, then transfer it to the refrigerator to chill.

When you are ready to serve the ice tea, prepare cups with ice and pour Agua de Jamaica over the ice.

Instructions for hot tea:

Place a tablespoon of dried flowers in a tea bag or infuser in a cup.

Pour 8-10 oz of hot water over the flowers in the cup.

Allow to steep for 5 minutes or more

Sweeten as desired.
