What is IVF? How does it work in Ukraine?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a comprehensive assisted reproductive technology (ART) that helps couples who are having difficulty conceiving a child. This technology consists of a series of procedures in which eggs are removed from a woman’s ovaries, fertilized with sperm in the laboratory and then implanted in the woman’s uterus. IVF in Ukraine is in great demand, not only among Ukrainian couples, but also among foreign couples. So about the characteristics of IVF here and in general — further in our article.

The IVF Process: An Overview

The process starts with ovarian stimulation, where the woman is given hormones to stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs. This increases the chances of retrieving several viable eggs for fertilization.  Once the eggs are mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries through a small surgical procedure called follicular aspiration. This is usually done under sedation or anesthetic.

Meanwhile, a sperm sample is taken from the male partner or a donor. The eggs are then fertilized with the sperm in the laboratory, either by conventional insemination or by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The fertilized eggs, now embryos, are grown in the laboratory for several days. Embryologists monitor their development and the best quality embryos are selected for transfer.

The selected embryos are transferred to the woman’s uterus through a thin catheter. If the embryo successfully implants in the womb lining, it can develop into a pregnancy. About two weeks after the embryo transfer, a blood test is done to see if a pregnancy has been achieved.
