How To Remove Odor From Carpets
I love the feeling of carpet. It is just so soft and cozy, especially on cooler days….unfortunately it’s also hard to keep clean.
Because of this, given the choice, I almost always opt for hard flooring in every room of the house just because they are easier to clean. Having a dog and small children, carpet has just never made sense, no matter how nice it may be.
Until now.
When we bought our house, every bedroom in the house was covered in light cream carpet.
At first I thought “oh great, this is going to be a nightmare with a big black dog and two messy little boys”.
Then I gave it a little time and came up with a few ways to keep it fresh, and I can happily say that it is still just as fresh as the day we moved in.
Now, this particular recipe is just to remove odors, it doesn’t actually clean spots or stains.
For that I use my All-Purpose Thieves Household Cleaner and it works AMAZING. Like completely removes disgusting dried poop stains amazing (don’t ask me how I know).

But carpet tends to hold onto odors from everything in the room and eventually it will start to smell musty.
That’s where this DIY homemade carpet deodorizer comes in.
I use this deodorizer almost every time I vacuum and it always smells so fresh and clean when I’m done. It smells like a new room!

Use Essential Oils To Remove Odors
Which Essential Oils Should You Use?
So you can use pretty much whatever essential oils you want, it just depends on what scents you really gravitate towards.
But if you wants to use oils that are specifically known for being great at tackling bad odors, here are a few that I recommend:
Purification
In the Young Living oils collection, Purification is a blend containing rosemary, lemongrass, citronella, lavandin, myrtle and tea tree oils.
I’m pretty sure most essential oil companies make an oil blend similar to this, Do Terra has one named Purify I believe.
All the oils in this blend are powerful odor killers and together they work even better. I almost always reach for this blend when I am looking for odor control around the house.
Citrus Fresh
This is a blend of orange, lemon, tangerine, grapefruit, mandarin orange and spearmint oils. It is incredibly refreshing and one of my favorite oils to diffuse just because it smells so good!
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is very strong and great at really cleaning the air. It’s a popular oil in cleaning just for it’s strong, fresh scent and purifying properties.
Pine
There’s a reason a lot of cleaning products are pine scented. It smells incredibly fresh and clean but isn’t too overpowering like eucalyptus or tea tree. This oil is purifying, cleansing and compliments most other oils used along with it.
How To Make DIY Homemade Carpet Deodorizer
Supplies you’ll need:
1-2 cups baking soda
20-30 drops essential oils (I ended up using pine and orange oils)
glass jar (can be a mason jar or shaker jar, I just used what I had on hand)
Simply pour the baking soda in the jar and add your essential oils. When it’s time to use, sprinkle the powder lightly all over your carpets, let it sit for about 15-20 minutes then vacuum it up!
Note* Be sure to check your vacuum manufacturer instructions to make sure baking soda won’t clog it!
And that’s it! Enjoy!
